The Next Generation: Fan de Fantástica

Abundant Amalgamations

You might feel yourself suddenly spiraling downwards into a vibrant, buzzing rabbit hole when exploring the work of Fan de Fantástica. The Madrid-based digital filmmaker and collage artist specializes in abundant amalgamations of imagery, texture, and form, which blur boundaries and invite curiosity. In the world of Fan de Fantástica, there is no empty space, only complex compositions which overwhelm the senses with variety and assortment. However, each work is not intended to be untangled or organized. Instead, their miscellany and diversity highlight the plentiful powers of cross-cultural experimentation and embracing highly individual perspectives. What the artist’s plenteous collages really translate to is the idea that nothing should be ignored, because when reconfigured in the right context it might lead us towards places we may never have thought to go.

Part One:

Question #1: Who are you?

I am a bowl of chicken curry in Toyohashi.
I am a street meat bun in Leicester Square.
I am a drop of Lapsang Souchong tea in Haidian.
I am a green soup made with Yak near Muztag Peak.
I am a plate of Jamón de bellota 100% Ibérico in Puerta del Sol.

Question #2: Who are you as an artist?

I am a film director, collage maker, and multi-talented artist.

A noisy street market in Asia, Mozart, a pig, outer space, flowers in the hair of a young girl, and a nap in a summer afternoon, all these random things are having many connections in my mind, and they altogether compose a marvellous imaginary world. The presentation of this world can be a collage, a film, a piece of music, or any other form of art. I absolutely love all kinds of art. And I am having so much fun mixing different elements together and create something mine. There is actually no boundary in the imaginary worlds.

Question #3: What do you think about while creating?

Time, layers of meaning/metaphors, and colours.

Time. Because I tell stories in my art, my collages, and my films. One individual defamation is created carefully for that purpose.

Layers of meaning/metaphors. Almost everything in my art and films has hidden meanings. It could be a dialogue that is waiting to be discovered by someone at some moment, or a monologue that I am screaming to myself. Colours. I collect different colours and patterns in my visual library. I love playing with colours.

Question #5: Why do you need art your life?

I am deeply in love with all human cultures and relationships because they are powerful and beautiful. I mix them into the collages (and films) in my own way, so each of the series or single pieces can not only show an individual imaginary world but also can be strongly connected with humans. Art is my way to connect and communicate with others

Part Two:

In this funky, colourful, and over the top world I’ve created with imagination, there are numerous details of traditional far east philosophies and contemporary western points of view, mixing with music, Science Fiction, poems, industrial engineering, dancing, mathematics, natural sciences, mangas, street art, and many other seemingly unrelated cultures. One way or another, somehow I’ve mixed all my ‘weird’ personal experiences into my collage creations.
